The Tale of Genji Museum Grand Opening: November 8, 1998

The last section of The Tale of Genji has come to be called The Ten Chapters of Uji since they took place there. A new museum along the bank of the Uji river will shortly open its doors to the public. Called The Tale of Genji Museum, this museum will also bring to life the days of the court descriptively written about in The Tale of Genji. A 1/100 scale replica of the Rokujo-in is on display along with replications of oxen carts, folding screens, lampstands, inkstone cases and other items used by the court nobility during the Heian Period.
The Tale of Genji is introduced using images and sound. The movie Ukifune which was directed by Shinoda Masahiro, features Ukifune, the heroine of the Ten Chapters of Uji, is shown.
The dolls and other material used in the creation of this movie are on display at the museum.
A library specializing in The Tale of Genji, a lecture room, quiz and game corner, museum shop, coffee shop, and other entertainment are provided at the museum as well.
Access to the museum is easy, it being only a simple train ride. Please be sure to visit the Costume Museum when you visit The Tale of Genji Museum.
